Information for People Living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

The SASSA Disability Grant is a government social grant intended to support adults who are unable to work due to a physical or mental disability.

For some people living with multiple sclerosis (MS), symptoms such as severe fatigue, mobility difficulties, cognitive challenges, or vision problems may affect the ability to work and may qualify them for assessment for this grant.

However, approval is not automatic and depends on a formal medical assessment and other eligibility requirements.

To apply for the Disability Grant, you must generally:

• Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognised refugee
• Be between 18 and 59 years old
• Have a medical condition confirmed by a doctor
• Pass the means test (income and assets limits)
• Not be cared for permanently in a state institution

When applying, you will normally need to take the following documents to the SASSA office:

• Your South African ID document
• Medical report or supporting letter from your doctor or neurologist
• Proof of income or unemployment
• Banking details
• Proof of residence

SASSA may also require a medical assessment by a doctor appointed by SASSA.

• Visit your nearest SASSA office.
• A SASSA official will assist you in completing the application form.
• Your documents will be verified.
• You may be referred for a medical assessment.
• You will receive a receipt confirming your application.

Applications can take up to three months to be processed.

If the grant is approved, payments are backdated to the date of application.

Multiple sclerosis is a complex and often invisible condition, and eligibility for a disability grant depends on how the disease affects your daily functioning.

Some individuals with MS are able to continue working, while others experience significant disability that makes employment difficult or impossible.

Because of this, not all people with MS will qualify for a disability grant.

A detailed medical report from a neurologist can be helpful in explaining how MS affects your ability to work.
